Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Dumerso G1 Natural
Released December 2020: Sourced through List and Beisler this fresh 2020 harvest was difficult to get our hands on due to COVID. This Natural Yirgacheff is a grade 1 with traditional notes of floral and fruit medley. Boasting an SCA score of 89 points this coffee ranks as one of our best coffees of the year. It will be reviewed in January 2021 by Coffee Review.

Blind Assessment: Sweetly fruit-toned, crisply tart. Raspberry, honeysuckle, almond, lemon zest, caramel in aroma and cup. Sweet-tart structure with juicy acidity; full, syrupy-smooth mouthfeel. The finish consolidates to raspberry and caramel notes.
Notes: Yirgacheffe is a coffee region in southern Ethiopia that produces distinctive coffees largely from indigenous varieties of Arabica long grown in the region. The Dumerso Mill is located in the small town of Dumerso, Ethiopia near the larger town of Yirgacheffe within the Gedeo Zone. Mr. Hirut Birhanu and his family own and run this mill. They collect ripe coffee cherries from small family farms near and around the mill. Over four hundred local residents are also hired by the mill during the harvest period to help with processing, coffee transport, and various other tasks.
The workers sort the cherries for ripeness, with only the ripest cherries being used for Grade One qualities. Drying the ripe cherries can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks, depending on the weather. Once the cherries hit the raised beds they are turned and raked ever two to three hours to prevent any molds or rot from occurring. This allows the coffee to dry evenly and cleanly.
Once dried, the coffee is then transported to the capital city of Addis Ababa to be dry-milled, further sorted, bagged and exported. Ethiopia exports through the port of Djibouti where the coffee sales across the Pacific. At L+B, we try to use the port of entry closest to the port of exit, and so this coffee sails direct to Oakland, CA where we warehouse it in The Annex Warehouse.
Ethiopia Natural Processed Coffees are known for their wild flourish of fruit and berry tones. What separates these natural coffees from other around the world is that special floral and tea-like characteristic so prominent in Yirgacheffe coffee. The best natural processed coffees from this region hold a balance of the fruit flavors and the floral expressions, and this coffee certainly does this.
